FDTD Investigation of a Microwave Link for Data Telemetry in Retinal Prosthesis Applications

چکیده
Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) or Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) are leading causes of blindness worldwide. It has been shown that patients suffering from diseases like RP and AMD could recover partial vision by means of controlled electrical stimulations of the retina. Thus, a retinal prosthesis can be developed where the functionality of permanently damaged retinal photoreceptors is replaced by a 2-D array of electrodes, which can provide electrical stimulation on the surface of the retina. Various experimental studies on human subjects [l], have reported perception of simple shapes and forms corresponding to the pattern of electrical stimulation provided, thus restoring a limited form of vision.

متن کاملTowards high-resolution retinal prostheses with direct optical addressing and inductive telemetry.
OBJECTIVE Despite considerable advances in retinal prostheses over the last two decades, the resolution of restored vision has remained severely limited, well below the 20/200 acuity threshold of blindness. Towards drastic improvements in spatial resolution, we present a scalable architecture for retinal prostheses in which each stimulation electrode is directly activated by incident light and ...
متن کاملComputational Electromagnetics for a Retinal Prosthesis to Restore Partial Vision in the Blind
This paper addresses the latest advancements in the application of computational electromagnetics and smart telemetry systems to the development of a retinal prosthesis to restore the sight in the blind. Numerical methods and models have been developed to a) accurately characterize the thermal increase in the human head and eye associated with the operation of the retinal prosthesis, b) determi...
